Government cracks down on vape free samples for children
May 30, 2023

Today (30th May, 2023), the UK government has announced plans to tackle the rise in teenagers using vapes.

The announcement confronts the issue of vape use in children, as they obtain the nicotine-containing products illegally. It also acknowledges plans to close the nicotine-free vape loophole, which currently sees young people able to obtain free samples of vapes that do not contain nicotine - the addictive substance.

David Lawson, CEO of Inter Scientific, said:

“We welcome the announcement by the Prime Minister today. I believe there is a correlation between the rise in youth use of vape products in the UK and the influx of illegal vape products which appear to target youth. Illegal vape products risk undermining the advances in public health that vaping has achieved over recent years."

Recent NHS figures for 2021 showed a significant rise in underage use of the products, prompting the government to step in and pledge £3 million to address the problem earlier this year.

Although current news highlights the issues of illegal vapes and underage vaping, it’s important to note that the NHS actively promotes vaping as an alternative to smoking for those looking to quit the habit. It is also identified as being 95% less harmful than smoking.
